When our friends at Dunn Thexton PR reached out to pitch the new Aston Hill Collection for a potential story, I was first mostly intrigued by the history and heritage of what the Vancouverites nicknamed The British Properties, located on the other side of the iconic Lions Gate Bridge. Here’s a breakdown.

Acquired in 1931 by the Guinness Family

Owned by the Guinness family of Ireland (perhaps best known for its GUINNESS beer), the British Pacific Properties Company owns all the land in West Vancouver above the Upper Levels Highway from Taylor Way to Horseshoe Bay. Totalling some 4,000 acres, the land was purchased from the municipality during the Great Depression, when residents were unable to pay their property taxes and the local municipality was threatened with bankruptcy. Properties here, on West Vancouver’s south-facing slopes, are much sought after for their panoramic views and unique topography.

Construction of the Lions Gate Bridge

In 1938 began the construction of the iconic Lions Gate Bridge also partly financed by the Guinness Family and was a vital employment booster in exceptionally difficult economic times, while projects such as Park Royal (one of Canada’s first shopping centres) and Capilano Golf Club contributed significantly to growing and modernizing West Vancouver. West Van then went from a resort-style beachside enclave to a leafy suburban community with roads, parks and commercial activities.

The Aston Hill Collection New Construction Development

This is a new collection of 20 spacious and elegant homes which all include several terraces for outdoor living, huge walk-through pantries with a wet bar, an elevator, an ample entranceway that offers a sense of arrival and a wide glass-framed wooden staircase that acts as a conduit for all three floors of the 3700 square foot space (model home).

According to the developer, Aston Hill is priced at approximately $836 per square foot while the average price per sq/ft in new buildings in downtown Vancouver is $1200 sometimes higher for luxury projects.

Back in the 30’s, the Guinness family’s decision to hire the Olmsted Brothers, a renowned firm of U.S. landscape architects responsible for such distinctive city landmarks as NYC’s Central Park and Montreal’s Mount Royal Park.

Nowadays, the BPP has the comparable ambition to create a mountain path for pedestrians and cyclists will wind through the community linking neighbourhoods and schools. The Village area will become the heart of the upper lands community featuring shopping, services and recreational activities.
