Entering the workshop of Dix of Carré is like stepping inside the cavern of Ali baba. Everywhere you can notice pieces of their past, present and future projects piling up. The company of Design-engineering for Entertainment founded by Félix Marzell and David Barabé creates playful interactive installations for museums, city amenities and urban festivals.

“With every new project on the table, we try to bring in the latest technologies and gadgets. We are constantly doing research and development! Therefore, no two projects are ever the same and it keeps our team motivated and fulfilled” explains Félix Marzell, sitting on a giant banana.

You might have seen this banana as part of an installation commissioned by the city of Montréal, to be the toast of tourists (and locals) going in and out of the Métro Mont-Royal.

“We were simply eating bananas around a table during brainstorm, when we started to just play with the peel, which had an interesting way of holding shape” keeps explaining Félix.

He then takes us to the computer lab to show us how a potential object like this banana goes through 3D modelling before it gets build in real life.

Everything Dix au Carré conceptualizes and produces, is meticulously modelized with softwares and then sequenced in an automated production process to ensure no time or material get wasted. “For particular projects, we even craft custom composite materials, alloys and substances to achieve our end goal.”

They recently built a life-size guillotine for the Ubisoft’s launch tour of Assassin’s Creed where the descending blade cut was simulated by an air jet, giving major chills to anyone willing to put his neck to the test!

“Another interesting project was our sculptural reproduction of iconic Habitat 67 buildings in cheese, for an exhibit in Switzerland. We brought in a professional sculptor who was very appealed by the challenge”.

Once a project has been researched and jumpstarted by the core team, our makers will then assemble a multidisciplinary all-star team to make it happen. “The best part although is when you actually witness people and festival goers interact with our installation” reminds David.
